Coordinating cowls for Maddie and Harvey
You know when you learn a new word and then you seem to hear it everywhere? At the moment I’m having the same kind of feeling about cobalt blue. It’s Maddie’s favourite colour and I’d never really paid it much attention, but after I started making her a cobalt blue tulle skirt, cobalt started popping up on my radar all over the shop. When MillaMia’s limited edition yarn in cobalt and lime arrived I just had to get out my favourite cowl pattern.
This pattern was designed by Purl Bee for Alchemy Kozmos and is available free on Ravelry. I’ve revised it for so many different yarns – see a few of my previous cowls in this pattern here and here. I decided to make coordinating cowls for Harvey and Maddie, reversing the colours so that hers is cobalt with a lime stripe and his is lime with a cobalt stripe. These were both quick knits, especially Harvey’s! MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino is perfect for cowls that are worn close to the neck – it’s super soft and snuggly.
Here is what I did to revise the pattern for Maddie and Harvey’s cowls:
2 balls MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino in Cobalt
1 ball MillaMia Naturally Soft Merino in Lime
6mm circular needles in 40cm and 60cm lengths
I doubled the yarn to make it extra springy.
Maddie: Cast on 70 stitches in lime on 6mm x 60cm circulars. This cowl is meant to fit an 8 year old.
Harvey: Cast on 45 stitches in cobalt on 6mm x 40cm circulars. This cowl is meant to fit a 6 month old.
Carefully twist your stitches and join while weaving in the contrasting colour and knitting one row. Purl one row. Continue alternating one knit and one purl row (garter stitch) until your work measures 20cm (Maddie) and 10cm (Harvey).
Cast off on a larger needle (I used a 9mm) as loosely as you possibly can.
Harvey loves his!
