Here is a look at what we have coming up in July and August at our West Hampstead shop! You can find all of our sewing, quilting, knitting and craft classes here.

Sew a Colette Wren Dress with Rachel Pinheiro

Two evenings: Thursdays, 30 June and 7 July, 6:30pm – 9:30pm (£95)

The Wren Dress is a feminine, figure-flattering wrap-style knit dress that can be styled up or down. Make it sleek with a sleeveless bodice and a fitted, six-gore skirt, or romantic with short sleeves and a gathered A-line skirt! In this class we’ll cover everything you need to know about sewing a knit garment on a home sewing machine, from fitting to finishing. You’ll also get a chance to try using an overlocker and will have the option to try using a twin needle to hem your dress.

English Paper Piecing: Hand Pieced Curves with Jenny Haynes

One day: Saturday, 2 July, 10am – 4pm (£75)

Learn how to hand-piece curves beautifully using an English Paper Piecing technique. In this class our teacher Jenny Haynes will teach you the basics of English Paper Piecing and how to sew pieced curves by hand whilst creating a beautiful little pin cushion to show off your new skills!

Zen and the Art of Sweater Construction with Renée Callahan

One day: Sunday, 3 July, 10am – 3pm (£75)

The Zen Variations by Renée Callahan is a collection of sweaters that embraces the idea that knitting is a physical meditation. Each sweater begins in the same way with a top-down, set-in sleeve construction, and then develops with variations on the theme of Zen. The patterns are designed for Acadia by The Fibre Co. and have simple, clean designs to showcase the rustic beauty of the yarn.

We will be hosting Renée at our West Hampstead shop for Zen and the Art of Sweater Construction, a special event that will include a Zen Variations trunk show and a lesson in top-down seamless sweater construction. Join us for a chance to see samples of all of the patterns in person and get started knitting the sweater of your choice from the collection! This workshop will cover the sweater construction Renée used for the Zen Variations sweaters, guiding you through choosing the correct size for you, the short-row shoulders, picking up sts for trims and sweater elements, how to work a set-in seamless sleeve, adjusting a pattern to get the perfect fit and more. The class fee will include the pattern of your choice and 15% off Acadia yarn.

Introduction to Cable Knitting with Rachel Brown

One evening: Weds, 6 July, 6:30pm – 9:30pm (£45)

Cable knitting is a technique used to create the appearance of a twisted rope or plait. It looks complicated, but it shouldn’t be scary! In this one-evening class, our experienced instructor will take the fear out of cable knitting and show you that this beautiful stitch is actually quite simple. You’ll learn how to read patterns and charts and have the opportunity to swatch various cables and technqiues. If you’re interested in getting help on a specific cable knitting pattern, feel free to bring it with you.

This is a Sewing Machine with Lisa Falconer

One evening: Weds, 6 July, 6:30pm – 9:30pm (£45)

This class will introduce aspiring stitchers – or those who need a refresher – how to use a sewing machine! In this comprehensive three hour class, you’ll get sewing machine-savvy and leave with enough knowledge and confidence to start making your own projects at home! This workshop is focussed solely on the skill of sewing and the entire three hours will be spent practising each element below to ensure that the methods stay in your mind after the class.

We use Janome XL601 sewing machines in our class. If you’d like to bring your own machine, please let us know in advance and come to class with your machine’s handbook.

Sew a By Hand London Victoria Blazer with Elisalex de Castro Peake

Two days: Saturday, 9 July, and Sunday, 10 July, 11am – 4pm (£135)

The Victoria is a casual blazer featuring 3/4 length sleeves with cropped and sleeveless variations. Designed with a generous amount of ease for a laid back style, this blazer is the perfect throw-it-over-everything wardrobe staple. In this class you’ll learn to sew a Victoria Blazer with the pattern’s designer, co-founder and head of design for By Hand London, Elisalex de Castro Peake. By the end of this relaxed two-day class, you’ll have several new skills under your belt, including turned up French seam cuffs and side seam pockets, and a gorgeous new blazer to show for it!

Sew a Grainline Stowe Bag with Rachel Pinheiro

Two evenings: Weds, 13 July, and Thurs, 14 July, 6:30pm – 9:30pm (£95)

The Stowe Bag is the ideal project bag – whatever your project may be! The main compartment is perfect for works-in-progress while the many side pockets organise small tools, patterns and notebooks. You’ll find it equally useful for a variety of purposes from travel to everyday! In this class we’ll sew up the Stowe pattern in the size and version of your choice, covering techniques from straight stitching to applying bias binding.

July Knitting Workshop for Beginners and Improvers with Rachel Brown

One evening: Wednesday, 13 July, 7pm – 9pm (£35)

This class is for total beginners, knitters who haven’t picked up their needles in years and want a refresher or students who want to learn or improve a knitting technique. In this monthly class we will tailor knitting instruction to your specific skills and goals so you can tackle a new project or just get started with your new favourite hobby! Can’t wait that long? This class is also offered in June!

The Datura Blouse from Deer & Doe is a semi-fitted sleeveless blouse with triangle cut-out neckline or Peter Pan collar and buttoned lower back – perfect for your summer wardrobe! ln this class Rachel Pinheiro, prolific dressmaker and popular sewing blogger, will teach you the ins and outs of blouse construction in a fun one-day class. You will learn fitting methods and step by step construction techniques, including how to sew detailed neckline or attach a collar (your choice) and how to create a button placket and buttonholes.

Sew a Grainline Lakeside Pyjama Set with Rachel Pinheiro

One day: Sunday, 17 July, 10am – 4pm (£95)

The Grainline Lakeside Pyjamas are a summertime pyjama set featuring a spaghetti strap tank with split back and gym short style shorts. This set is perfect for lounging or sleeping while keeping you cool and cute. In this class we’ll cover sewing straight seams, constructing darts, inserting elastic and working with bias binding.

Sew a Quilted Cushion with Judith Dahmen

One day: Saturday, 27 August, 10am – 4pm (£85)

In this class you’ll learn many of the steps to making a patchwork quilt by sewing a quilted cushion! Participants will learn how to use a rotary cutter, how to machine piece patchwork pieces together using a ¼ inch foot on a sewing machine, how to machine quilt the front of the cushion, how to sew a zip. Students will also have the option of learning how to attach a binding. In short almost everything required to start making quilts! Can’t wait that long? This class is also offered in June!

Learn to Make a Quilt with Judith Dahmen

Four evenings: Tuesdays, 30 August and 6, 13 and 20 September, 6:30pm – 9:30pm

In this four-evening course you will learn all the techniques that are required to make a quilt starting from the design process to piecing, machine or hand quilting and finishing with the all important binding that gives the quilt its frame. At the end of the course, you’ll leave with a gorgeous finished lap or baby-sized quilt.
