Let’s all wear…nautical!

Selfish sewing time! We see a lot of fabric trends come and go in the shop and we thought it would be fun to pair fabric ideas with sewing patterns in different themes that we’re seeing a lot of. It’s a fun project for us, and we hope it will inspire you to create some awesome garments for yourself. So today I give you: nautical!

Anchor-print cotton denim paired with the Short Chataigne pattern by Deer and Doe

Fabric: Printed Cotton Denim – Anchors
Sewing Pattern: Short Chataigne by Deer and Doe (available in store or via info@thevillagehaberdashery.co.uk)

This lightweight denim is just right for a pair of cute shorts and the pattern is subtle enough that you can pull on virtually any top and you’re out the door for summer fun!

Sailor's Dobby by Robert Kaufman paired with The Factory Dress pattern by Merchant & Mills

Sewing pattern: The Factory Dress by Merchant & Mills

We can’t get enough of Sailor’s Dobby! It’s a lightweight cotton fabric with dobby dots that give it texture and a seaworthy vibe. We think it would be so cute paired with the relaxed-fit Factory Dress in summer.

Regatta Border by Michael Miller paired with the Emery Dress pattern by Christine Haynes

Fabric: Regatta Border by Michael Miller
Sewing pattern: Emery Dress by Christine Haynes

This pairing is a no-brainer, since we’ve seen it and loved it already! This fabric has a single border, so you’ll have a boat print gathered skirt with a bold striped bodice. It couldn’t be cuter!

Nautique Chambray Prints - Anchors by Robert Kaufman paired with the Vintage Shirt Dress pattern by Sew Over It

Fabric: Nautique Chambray Prints – Anchors by Robert Kaufman
Sewing pattern: Vintage Shirt Dress by Sew Over It

We love the idea of pairing this printed chambray with sleeveless version of the Vintage Shirt Dress. It’s just the sort of frock you can imagine wearing on the deck of a ship, chilled glass of prosecco in hand.

Spring Walk - Ship Ahoy by Little Cube for Cloud9 Fabrics paired with the Beatrix Top pattern by Made by Rae

Fabric: Spring WalkShip Ahoy by Little Cube for Cloud9 Fabrics
Sewing pattern: Beatrix Top by Made by Rae

Have a little fun with this toy boat-print organic fabric and a button-back top! From French illustrator Sarah Betz, this is the sort of design-led novelty print we just adore, and it offers a playful take on our nautical theme.

What do you think? Will you make any of these garments? Are there any other themes you’d like us to explore?
