Let’s get to know By Hand London!
Welcome back to our series of Q&As with independent sewing pattern companies! This week we’ll be getting to know By Hand London! BHL is an independent sewing pattern label, set up and run by Charlotte, Elisalex and Victoria, a trio of gal pals based in London. Creating patterns inspired by and named after the stylish ladies they know and admire, the designs themselves are an up-to-date take on classic silhouettes and so act as a canvas for your unique look. BHL celebrate making, individual style and creative women, designing for those who love to dress up, stand out and customise their own wardrobe.
Their next pattern, the Zeena, is due to be released next week! Find out more about Zeena here (and don’t forget to admire the fabrics used in the samples because we provided them!)
Describe the style of your garments in three words: Feminine, classic, contemporary
Tell us about the woman you design for: First and foremost, we design for ourselves! We love to dress up and have fun with the garments we make and so find ourselves designing with that in mind.
What body shapes work best with your patterns? We try to design with a multitude of body shapes in mind, especially as the three of us are all quite different. We love and aspire to a classic hourglass silhouette – think 1950s siren with a cinched waist and bodacious curves – and this definitely comes across in our designs!
What should home dressmakers know about using your patterns? We have designed our patterns to be as easy to follow and joyful to sew as possible! Our instructions are incredibly in depth and fully illustrated, with lots of little tips and tricks to help you along the way. On our website we provide even more support in the form of sewalongs, tutorials and pattern hacking ideas.
