Let’s get to know Gather Patterns!

Welcome back to our series of Q&As with independent sewing pattern companies! This week we’ll be getting to know London-based Gather Patterns! A London based partnership, Gather founders Sandra and Caroline are friends and sisters-in-law who decided to create the sewing patterns they themselves wanted to sew. With backgrounds in fashion and design, they juggle their sewing pattern company alongside full time jobs and small children!

Gather are working on expanding their pattern range and introducing more curated kits to go alongside their patterns with all the fabrics and notions included. In the meantime, the Mortmain Dress and Buchanan Robe are especially popular with our customers!

Describe the style of your garments in three words:

Classic, versatile, beginner-friendly (or does that count as 4!

Tell us about the woman you design for:

She’s creative, stylish and loves a rummage around a fabric shop as much as we do! She’ll mix clothes she’s sewn herself with vintage finds and high-street classics. She loves loves being at home with a good book and a cup of tea (but that certainly doesn’t mean that she’ll stand on the sidelines at a party!)

What body shapes work best with your patterns?

We don’t design for a specific shape but draft using ‘standard’ high street measurements (although there’s no such thing as a standard body shape!). One of the best things about sewing your own clothes is you can adapt to your own shape and create a perfectly fitted garment, something that’s hard to find with shop bought clothes.

What should home dressmakers know about using your patterns?

Our patterns themselves are printed on lovely thick paper which makes using them much easier that the traditional flimsy tissue. They also come with a very comprehensive book of instructions – aimed at simplifying the process as much as possible for beginners but not patronising those who are more advanced. We’re working on expanding the tips section of our website to include relevant tutorials but we’re always reachable by email or twitter to help with any issues our customers have!
