Summer is getting closer folks! Learn a new skill this May in our bright and airy studio space in our West Hampstead shop! When the sun is shining we fling open the windows and it’s such a lovely place to be. We have classes to suit every level, interest and schedule.

Intro to Crochet Flowers with Annie Windley
Tuesday, 1 May, 7pm – 9pm (£38)

Learn to crochet daisies, buttercups and leaves that you can use in a wreath, a garland, or as embellishments on garments, cushions or other items! Suitable for complete beginners, during this class you will learn how to follow a crochet pattern, how to crochet a number of basic stitches and how combine these to make flowers. Our teacher will also offer guidance for how to sew the floral motifs onto a felt base to make a wreath. Find out more and sign up here.

Wednesday, 2 May, 6:30pm – 9:30pm (£45)

This class will introduce aspiring stitchers – or those who need a refresher – how to use a sewing machine! In this comprehensive three hour class, you’ll get sewing machine-savvy and leave with enough knowledge and confidence to start making your own projects at home! This workshop is focussed solely on the skill of sewing and the entire three hours will be spent practising each element below to ensure that the methods stay in your mind after the class. Learn to Knit with Renée Callahan

Do you want to learn to knit or need a refresher on the basics? This class is for you! Embroidery for Beginners with Carina Envoldsen-Harris
Tuesday, 8 May, 11am – 2pm (£40)

The class is a fun and colourful introduction to hand embroidery that is designed for beginners or those who want a refresher. You will start by learning the tools of the craft, how to use a hoop and how to transfer a pattern. Next, we’ll explore a selection of stitches – running stitch, back stitch, stem stitch, French knots and more – by creating a sweet modern sampler designed by Carina. Learn to Crochet Granny Squares with Annie Windley
Tuesday, 8 May, 7:00pm – 9:00pm (£38)

Learn to crochet the classic granny square! In this two hour class, you’ll learn to create a granny square that can be used as a drinks coaster or as the start of a blanket, accessory or anything else you can dream up! We’ll cover basic crochet stitches, how to finish a square and how to connect squares to create larger projects plus how to follow a crochet pattern or chart. Sew a Rope Bowl with Sarah Jeffrey
Wednesday, 9 May, 7pm – 9pm (£40)

Sarah Jeffrey creates beautiful rope bowls for her brand Haar East and now you can learn to make them too! In this fun class you’ll learn how to sew a rope bowl on a home sewing machine, picking up tips on how to manipulate the rope into different shapes and how to use thread colours to create different results. You’ll be able to finish one medium-sized bowl or two small bowls in class – perfect for a gift or a treat for yourself! Rag Rugging for Beginners with Elspeth Jackson
Sunday, 13 May, 10am – 4pm (£75)

Learn to turn old rags into upcycled homeware with the beautiful craft of rag rugging! Our beginners’ workshop is designed to give you all the skills you need to be able to start any rag rug project for yourself at home. With plenty of help from our expert instructor throughout the day, you will learn how to use rag rug equipment, how to work with hessian, how to choose and prepare materials, how to design for rag rug, how to do the two different types of rag rugging (loopy and shaggy) and how to finish your work. During the session you will get the opportunity to begin a rug, cushion or smaller project (depending on how ambitious you’re feeling!). Work on the sewing or quilting project of your choice with the expert guidance of 2016 Great British Sewing Bee winner Charlotte Newland! You’re welcome to bring a project at any stage of completion to receive personalised instruction. Classes are kept small so you’ll have plenty of one-on-one time. This class is for you if you: *Want Charlotte to hold your hand whilst you set sleeves, insert an invisible zip or tackle a fly front, *Feel frustrated that you can’t get your home-sewn garments to fit right and want to learn how to adjust a pattern for your body, *Are interested in trying out reverse appliqué, foundation paper piecing, improv or any other quilting technique, *Love the look of one of Charlotte’s classes, but the date doesn’t work for you, *Or just want to hand-stitch your quilt binding and eat cake whilst listening to Charlotte tell rude jokes! Crochet Basket Workshop with Rachel Rogers
Tuesday, 15 May, 7pm – 9:30pm (£40)

Learn to crochet while creating a fun and endlessly useful crochet basket out of recycled t-shirt yarn! This class will introduce you to the basics of crochet, how to follow a crochet pattern, how to change colours and how to finish a crochet project. All materials are included in the class fee. Beginners Shibori: Itajime with Rob Jones
Wednesday, 16 May, 6:30pm – 9pm (£50)

This 2.5-hour session covers the range of Shibori techniques focussing on clamped resist techniques, known as Itajime and teaches you all about indigo. You will learn the three basic folding techniques for preparing fabric for clamp resist dyeing, known as “Kikko” – equilateral triangles, right angle triangles and squares. These can be varied in many ways to achieve different effects. Stitched Itajime uses stitch to create resist patterns on kikko folded parcels to create kaleidoscopic pieces. The traditional Sekka (snowflake) pattern will be demonstrated. Free clamping and board clamped techniques using a range of shaped boards and clamps will be covered and Rob will demonstrate how these can be used to produce a number of varied patterns and different shades of blue on the same piece of fabric using indigo. Foundation Paper Piecing Workshop with Charlotte Newland
Saturday, 19 May, 11:30am – 4:30pm (£80)

Foundation paper piecing is an addictive patchwork technique that enables you to sew intricate shapes accurately and achieve precise points perfectly! In the first half of this class, you’ll learn the technique by creating two different quilt blocks using foundation paper piecing patterns. In the second half, you’ll get to work on the pattern of your choice with the help of our experienced instructor. You’ll leave with the know-how to tackle any foundation piecing pattern and several finished blocks that you’ll be able to turn into cushions, tote bags or the basis for an entire quilt! Sunday, 20 May, 11:30pm – 4:30pm (£80)

Learn to sew with knits whilst working with the pattern of your choice! This is your chance to face your fears of sewing with knit fabrics head on with the help of our talented instructor. We’ll cover key skills for sewing with knits on a home sewing machine, from fitting to finishing, so you can leave with a finished garment and the confidence to keep sewing all the knit patterns you’ve been dying to try! Watercolour Brush Lettering Workshop with Emma Block
Monday, 21 May, 6:30pm – 9pm (£60)

Taught by illustrator Emma Block, this contemporary brush lettering workshop will focus on developing skills and learning techniques allowing you to grow in confidence and start to develop your own brush lettering style. We’ll start with exercises to practice making shapes, creating lines of different thicknesses and using different brushstrokes. You’ll then practice writing the alphabet, words and phrases with plenty of help and guidance on hand. You will be given a complete set of materials which you can take away after class, including guide sheets, a brush and a tube of watercolour paint.Find out more and sign up here.

Crochet Granny Squares: Next Steps with Annie Windley
Tuesday, 22 May, 10:30am – 12:30pm (£38)

If you know how to crochet a basic granny square, this intermediate class is perfect to take your crochet to the next level. In the first part of the two-hour lession, you will learn a number of different variations on the basic square: such as starting with a circular motif, adding clusters for texture, and incorporating 3-dimensional effects like petals to give your project design some added interest and texture. You’ll also learn the principles behind creating a granny square variation so that you’ll be able to design a granny square of your very own. In the second part of the lesson you’ll learn a number of different ways to join your finished squares together: invisible methods, sewn and crocheted ones, a way to join squares as you go and also some decorative finishes to add a whole new layer of interest to your finished project. Introduction to Linocut Printing with Kate Guy
Tuesday, 22 May, 6:30pm – 9pm (£45)

In this fun two hour workshop you’ll learn the principles of relief printing and create your own linocut print! You will design, cut and print a small lino block. Depending on your pace, you will also have the opportunity to experiment with adding colour through collage and/or gradient roller technique. Weave a Wall Hanging with Stephanie Carswell
Saturday, 26 May, 11am – 5pm (£70)

Join textile artist and craft designer Stephanie Carswell for this one day weaving workshop and learn your rya knot from your soumak! Discover all the weaving basics from warping up and preparing your loom to creating different shapes and textures using yarn and wool roving. No previous experience is needed and you’ll be guided through how to use shuttles, needles and your fingers to weave and how to come up with your own designs as well as how to finish your piece and display it in your home. Using one of the packs provided and Hawthorn Handmade’s lightweight loom, everyone will leave with a beautiful wall hanging fit for the trendiest of spaces. Find out more and sign up here.
