September classes at The Village Haberdashery
Can you believe it is September and time for back to school? You’re never too old to learn something new so here’s a peek at the classes we have planned in September at our West Hampstead shop.
Sew an Emery Dress with Zoe Edwards
Two days: Sunday, 30 August and 6 September, 11am – 5pm – £135
The Emery Dress is a classic vintage-inspired dress that fits every body type and nearly every situation perfectly. In this class you’ll learn how to fit a bodice that is shaped with bust darts and waist darts, insert a lining, gather a skirt, set sleeves, sew in-seam pockets and insert an invisible zip. A collar or bow belt are fun, optional extras!
Sew a Geranium Dress with Zoe Edwards
One day: Saturday, 5 September, 10:30am – 5pm – £85
The Geranium Dress is a sweet and incredibly versatile little girls’ dress that offers lots of opportunities to learn new sewing techniques! This dress is lined and you’ll have the option of learning how to create a notched neckline and you can choose from View A to learn how to construct flutter sleeves and gather a skirt or View B to learn how to construct a pleated skirt. You’ll leave class with loads of new skills and an adorable dress!
Learn to Make a Quilt with Judith Dahmen
Four evenings: Tuesdays, 8, 15 & 22 September and 6 October, 6:30 – 9:30pm – £145
In this four-evening course you will learn all the techniques that are required to make a quilt starting from the design process to piecing, machine or hand quilting and finishing with the all important binding that gives the quilt its frame. At the end of the course, you’ll leave with a gorgeous finished lap or baby-sized quilt measuring 36″ by 40″.
Star Quilt Block of the Month – Another Star with Charlotte Newland
One evening: Monday, 7 September, 6:30pm – 9pm – £40
Each month Charlotte is teaching a new block as part of our 2015 Star Block of the Month project! Take one class or take them all – each block is a version of a star and together the blocks make up a 64″ x 82″ quilt top. Every class is a great opportunity to learn something new and improve your patchwork skills! The block we will learn in September is Another Star (yes, that is its name!)
Sew a Kim Dress with Elisalex de Castro Peake
Two days: Saturday, 12 September, and Saturday, 19 September, 11am – 5pm – £135
A pretty and feminine party dress, the By Hand London Kim Dress is a wardrobe essential! The fully lined, princess seamed sleeveless bodice comes with a choice of a simple scooped neckline or a vintage sweetheart and there are two very different skirt options – a wrap-style pencil skirt with a curved, petal-like overlap and a gathered skirt with pintuck hem. You’ll learn loads of garment construction techniques, from making fitting adjustments to princess seams, inserting a lining and so much more.
Learn to Sew a Bow Belt with Elisalex de Castro Peake
One evening: Thursday, 17 September, 6:30pm – 9:30pm – £55
This class will introduce novice stitchers – or those who need a refresher – to the basics of sewing, from threading the machine to stitching curves and corners. After getting to grips with the sewing machine, we will make a gorgeous 1950s inspired bow belt for you to take home. Taught by By Hand London Co-Founder Elisalex de Castro Peake, this lovely project was designed by Tilly Walnes for her blog,Tilly and the Buttons, and her book, Love at First Stitch.
Circle Skirt 101 with Elisalex de Castro Peake
One day: Friday, 18 September, 10am – 4pm – £85
Learn to make a timeless and simple circle skirt – no pattern required! We will be learning how to take accurate body measurements, mastering the maths behind the skirt (remember pi?!), inserting invisible zippers and stitching and finishing both straight and curved seams. There may even be time for a cheeky side seam pocket or two!
Introduction to Hand Quilting with Charlotte Newland
One evening: Monday, 28 September, 6:30pm – 9pm – £45
Hand quilting is the method of sewing together the three layers of a quilt (the backing, the wadding, and the top) together by hand rather than on a sewing machine. In this class you’ll learn how to add design, dimension and texture to your quilt whilst hand stitching using perle cotton for a beautiful, modern look.
Crochet Workshop with Elisalex de Castro Peake
One evening: Wednesday, 30 September, 7pm – 9pm – £35
Learn the addictive art of crochet with the guidance of our experienced instructor! and it is suitable for beginners or students who want to brush up on their skills. We’ll have a fun, beginner friendly project to get beginners started and more experienced students are welcome to bring a project they’d like help on.
