Shot cotton star quilt

I decided to try something a bit more adventurous than previously planned for my Kaffe Fassett shot cottons. The star block from the Summer Sampler Series Quilt Along at Fresh Lemons really caught my eye. This is a paper pieced block which is a totally new technique for me. I have piles of paper triangles, cut and uncut fabric and partially sewed pieces across my kitchen table because I haven’t had very much time to work on this yet, but I’ve managed to finish the very first square and I think it’s going to be stunning.

Do you ever draw your quilts before you start cutting? I enjoy trying to figure out what it will look like and sometimes it really helps with the math! Here is my sketch for this quilt to be. It will have 12 blocks, three across and four down, alternating two versions of the star.
