Beginners Shibori: Itajime with Rob Jones - 24 October
This 2.5-hour session covers the range of Shibori techniques focussing on clamped resist techniques, known as Itajime, and teaches you all about indigo. You will learn the three basic folding techniques for preparing fabric for clamp resist dyeing, known as "Kikko" - equilateral triangles, right angle triangles and squares. These can be varied in many ways to achieve different effects. Stitched Itajime uses stitch to create resist patterns on kikko folded parcels to create kaleidoscopic pieces. The traditional Sekka (snowflake) pattern will be demonstrated.
Free clamping and board clamped techniques using a range of shaped boards and clamps will be covered and Rob will demonstrate how these can be used to produce a number of varied patterns and different shades of blue on the same piece of fabric using indigo.
About your teacher: London-based Romor Designs was formed in the autumn of 2015 by Rob Jones, a shibori textiles designer and natural dyer. Having discovered Shibori, the ancient Japanese art of resist dyeing, at West Dean college, Rob went on to study in Japan under indigo guru, Bryan Whitehead. Rob‰۪s passion is in finding the new in the old, building on the tradition and centuries of skill that shibori has behind it. He believes in taking work in new directions by combining techniques and inventing his own forms.
