Freehand Curves Landscape Workshop with Jo Avery
Join visiting tutor Jo Avery for a day of creativity in our sunny studio! We will be exploring freehand cutting and curve piecing while building up three dimensional layers to achieve a pictorial effect of trees in a landscape. You will learn how to cut and piece a range of curves and how to plan vertical and horizontal layering to achieve a stunning effect. You won’t believe how quickly these come together and how much fun this technique is! You must have experience with machine piecing and using a rotary cutter.
About your teacher: Jo Avery has been playing with fabric and yarn for as long as she can remember, culminating in her current role as a designer, teacher and entrepreneur. Her natural affinity with expressive colour informs all her quilts and her love of intricate techniques such as needle-turn appliqué and embroidery allows her to embrace both modern and traditional aesthetics. She is a regular contributor to a number of quilt publications and enjoys inspiring others to discover their own creative potential through her studio workshops in Edinburgh. She organises the Stitch Gathering, an annual quilt retreat, and co-organises The Thread House weekend retreats in Bristol and Yorkshire along side Karen Lewis. She is also an Aurifil Designer with three of her own thread collections and in 2020 her first solo book will be published by Stash Books.
Skills needed: Students should know how to use a sewing machine and experience using a rotary cutter.
Class size: 8
Length: 6 hours
Materials: Students will need to bring or buy the materials for their quilt. You will need a good selection of different coloured fabric (approx. 10 different fabrics). Solid/plain/self-coloured fabric work best but you could also use small prints or blenders. Fat quarters can work but you also need some longer strips cut from width of bolt (usually 110cm wide) maximum 10”/25cm wide. Bring more rather than less fabric so you have a choice! You will need a larger piece for the background (sky), approx 40cm x WOB (width of bolt). All tools will be provided. You can purchase your fabric in the shop with a 10% student discount!
Location: The Village Haberdashery at West Hampstead Square NW6 2BR
