Intro to Creative Pattern Making with Claire-Louise Hardie
Want to learn how to transform a basic block into a pattern style? If you’ve ever wondered how creative pattern cutting works then this is the course for you. Over two full days, accomplished costumier, author and former Great British Sewing Bee producer Claire-Louise will teach you how to get creative and make patterns to express your personal style and imagination! Here's what we'll cover:
Day 1: Working either with your own custom block or a standard block sample you’ll learn how to transform a simple block into a selection of pattern styles. At the end of the day you’ll be confident in dart rotation and creating shape with 2D patterns.
Day 2: Following on from Day 1, you’ll learn how to create more complex pattern styles that have a drapey element like cowls or sarong skirts as well as pleating and asymmetrical details. You can bring along a fit buddy mannequin if you have one, or a standard size mannequin can be provided.
About your teacher: Originally trained as a Costume Designer at The Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama, Claire-Louise has worked in all aspects of Costume for Theatre, Film and TV with an impressive CV of employers that includes ITV and BBC. Her diverse professional experience made her the perfect candidate for the role of Sewing Producer for the BBC's Great British Sewing Bee, a role she did from the early development in 2012 to series 4 in 2016. When not teaching at Studios across the UK, she's also a Love Sewing Magazine columnist, a Sewing Bee Author and a costumier. A self confessed sewing geek, she has recently completed a masters at London college of fashion in pattern and garment technology.
Skills needed: This class is aimed at confident sewers. You should already know how to sew and work with a commercial dressmaking pattern and have made several garments for yourself.
Materials: All tools and materials are included for class use. If you have a custom block please bring it with you. Otherwise, basic blocks will be provided. Please let us know in the comments what you plan to bring! Students receive a 10% discount on any materials they purchase in the shop during their class.
