Slow Stitching Woodland Workshop with Lisa Mattock
We are delighted to welcome Lisa Mattock all the way from Australia to teach her beautiful workshops that celebrate the art and practice of slow stitching. Slow stitching centres around the 'make do and mend' and 'waste not, want not' ethos of yesteryear and involves simple and repetitive stitching inspired by the Japanese boro and sashiko methods.
Lisa's Woodland Quilt is inspired by the joy that can be found when you stumble upon the first snowdrops and bluebells of the season; the squelching of your gum boots in mud as you forage for wild berries, plump and bursting with colour. Notice the details such as acorns on oak trees and catch a glimpse of a shy hedgehogs or deer in the early morning mist.
There are nine panels in the Woodland quilt, each themed with a different
woodland motif. In the Woodland Workshop we will work on the Mushroom
Panel, and Lisa will also share with you the rest of the story so you can see how
it will all come together if you choose to make the full quilt.
About your teacher: Lisa first explored her love for fabrics and textiles during high school where her unique and original creations made from strips of fabric knitted and woven together and embellished with embroidered flowers made from beads and sequins led her to be invited to exhibit in “ArtExpress”, the prestigious annual exhibition featuring a selection of outstanding student artworks developed for the artmaking component of final year exams in Visual Arts in NSW.
A long and varied career in the creative industries followed. This has seen Lisa gather expertise as a textile artist, florist, food stylist, and visual merchandiser, culminating in her own upmarket florist and homewares store, which she ran in Sydney’s eastern suburbs for many years.
These experiences, combined with her long-standing passions for vintage fabrics, recycling, and embroidery made Forage a natural evolution. Here Lisa gets to follow and share her twin passions of discovering and collecting reclaimed fabrics and embellishments, and creating intricate layered textile artworks.
Skills needed: No experience is necessary.
